February 23, 1861: John Henry Brown’s Journal

John Henry Brown was a miniature painter, living and working in Philadelphia. Politically he was a Democrat, but he had met Lincoln in August of 1860 when he was commissioned to paint a portrait of Lincoln for a supporter.

Finished Mrs. Conovers picture. 

No seeming advance towards a settlement of our troubles, by the Peace Conference assembled at Washington, this week.

    President Elect Lincoln arrives in Washington. He travels in secret guarded by Ward Hill Lamon and detective Allan Pinkerton. There is no trouble. He takes rooms at Willards Hotel. He calles on President Buchanan and sees visitors to include Stephen Douglas.

    In Texas a referendum of the voters approve secession 34,794 to 11,235.
