February 16, 1861: John Henry Brown’s Journal

John Henry Brown was a painter of portrait miniatures, living and working in Philadelphia. He had met Lincoln in August of 1860 when he was commissioned to paint Lincoln’s portrait for a supporter, but although Brown liked Lincoln personally, he did not agree with Republican policies.

At Mrs. Conovers picture.

Congress and the Peace Conference have spent the whole of this week in fruitless attempts at a settlement of our political troubles.

    Jefferson Davis arrives in Montgomery, Alabama to be inaugurated as Provisional President of the Confederate States of America. According to William Yancy, notorious Southern fire eater (ardent secessionist), “The man and the hour have met.”

    Lincoln continues his journey to Washington, DC.

    In San Antonio, Texas the US Arsenal and Barracks are seized by state troops.
